What is Joann Fabrics?

Jo-Ann Fabric & Craft Stores, as the full name sounds, is a retail chain that offers  Fabrics, Sewing, Quilting, Knitting and Crochet items all under one roof. Jewelry and other similar items are now also available, due to hight demand.

Jo Ann Fabrics was founded back in 1943.  Hilda and Berthold Reich, and 2 friends, Sigmund and Mathilda Rohrbach (all german immigrants) first opened a cheese store and Fabrics were then added. Eventually, as the fabrics sold much better, they removed the cheese brands and included fabrics in the name. So, the Cleveland Fabric Shop was  official. The  Jo-Ann Fabrics name was added when the company expanded aggressively in the 1960′s. In  the 1980s the company added crafts and floral to their assortment.

In 1994 the company bought Cloth World, which added  342 stores to the home brand southern company. In 1998, they acquired House of Fabrics, as well.  By 1994 all the other stores were joined under the same umbrella name Jo-Ann Fabrics. The company now operates more than 1000 stores all over America.
